Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team While McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall Tests, but lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in July.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are not included because of injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the summer tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".

After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice number 10 spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at full-back.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish pack. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.

Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris if the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
