Cameron Norrie achieved the most important success of his career by rebounding from a set down to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the Paris Masters.

Although he had before defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory represents Norrie's initial success over a current world number one.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the latest English competitor in history to overcome a top-ranked player. "Coming back from injury last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to appreciate my game in the second half of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest win of my professional life, my maiden triumph over the top player and likely the most in-form athlete in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, positioned 31st in the world, also ended Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive premier event wins, which marked the finest stretch of results in the Spanish star's early professional path.

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently to success in the beginning as he sailed in the first set. Nevertheless, the British contender gradually fought his way into the match by executing with sharper placement and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, grueling rallies. His persistent consistency and reliability steadily left its mark.

Through most of the contest, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The rising talent appeared particularly uneasy executing his signature shot, which has been the best shot in the world for a large part of this year, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 mistakes.
