Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new term surfaced a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to doctors such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for physicians to treat a child who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these claims, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness resembles.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that was originally built on harmony has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
