‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from injury table to success with the Basque club

Whenhe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta featured in England, an 18-year-old playing for the reserve team against German opponents at the English ground in September 2015, he scored. The second time he played in the country, against the Black Cats weeks after, he converted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, well, he scored again. When he returned to the city to face United at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” So Athletic did their duty: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker reveals, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Man United, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At Lezama, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; after it, the quick travel to the airport and a further journey to England, this time to play Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words lights him up. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, partly because of the pressures of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. However, take in the big picture, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway flanked by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

He considered it challenging enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. The son of the one-time rival player the former professional and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he experienced a serious knee problem, dropped, a relegation and a return before he could earn his place, making his comeback to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the first team but each step you go through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his first game and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as something positive because it made me change the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You develop habits you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Strength training. With hip imbalance, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.

“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”

You also have to play. The striker moved upset in the pandemic season, aged 23, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he scored three times in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and when eventually the requirement appears for your role, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
