Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
