Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
