Peak Pizza? Domino's Leader Exits After Shift Towards Fried Chicken.
The boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the UK might have hit maximum pizza demand while diversifying the chain into poultry items has been ousted after tensions with its board.
Executive Change
Andrew Rennie is departing after only 24 months in charge, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a permanent CEO.
Rennie, who worked for the company for more than two decades, had sought to pivot the UK's biggest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, remarking in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the quickest rising food category in the international market.
Governance Friction
Reports indicate that there was friction between the CEO and the board over his approach and management style, although the company's official statement said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.
Recent Product Introduction
In the autumn, the chain introduced its chicken-focused brand – which the former chief described as a “major strategic shift” for the company – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the firm is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in 2026 as planned, it regards fried chicken as an addition to its primary pizza operations.
Leadership Statement
The Domino's chair, the Domino's chairman, commented: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and value creation in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing selecting the right chief executive to lead the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
Industry Challenges
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said sales declined by one and a half percent in the third quarter. In August, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it blamed reduced spending in the period before the budget and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15% drop in interim earnings.
Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut disclosed the closing of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the business behind its UK venues fell into administration.
Health Initiatives
Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards balanced diets, Domino's has introduced light items, such as its light base selection of bakes below 400 calories as well as vegan and gluten-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has 2,171 kcal, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Interim Management
Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the gaming group William Hill. It is believed that she does not want to assume the top job long-term.
Frampton stated: “Our team has a number of active growth and operational projects that we will be focused on carrying out at speed.”
Frampton noted these included ongoing development on the organization's procurement system and product development, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also without a full-time finance director until the spring, when Andrea joins from the drinks company C&C Group. Until then, Richard Snow serves as acting financial officer.
