Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Ace Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.
One snub was enough. Another and it might have appeared spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require the involvement of Jude Bellingham, although it is also Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the tactical structures and squad hierarchies essential with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's warm embrace.
The manager desires the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is about channeling it constructively. Individual quality matters but England have learned the hard way that there is a cost when fame takes over. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham was given food for thought after not being selected of the recent team selection. He watched England secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, scoring crucial goals for his club versus Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents rather than teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has shown him that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after proving that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Jude displays a competitive streak. You need a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone must support him and establish a atmosphere which he can [have] this edge against rivals and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games against Serbia and the other. Who else? Well, what about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to reach his best recently but Tuchel had to consider the player after his performance in his club's victory against the German side recently.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing both stars into the same XI, cramping the captain's influence as a result.
It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it harms the team harmony. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. The coach wants him close to Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this fantasy about him for a long time. I think it matches his abilities best.”
He agreed there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then obviously an issue exists, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.
“I think he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a specific system, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his good displays for City at defense. Interest is high.
The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a chance to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to score in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” he said. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him onside but he will be observing him carefully. Leave the ego at the door. It will make a very strong squad into an more effective one.
