Unmanned Attack on United Nations Base in War-Torn Sudan Claims 6 UN Personnel

A aerial bombardment targeted a UN logistics base in conflict-ridden Sudan on Saturday, leading to the deaths of six peacekeeping personnel, as stated by a announcement.

The strike targeted a peacekeeping logistics base in the city of Kadugli, located in the mid-country region of Kordofan.

Eight other soldiers were wounded in the strike. All the those affected are from Bangladesh, serving in the UN interim security force for Abyei (Unisfa).

“Attacks against United Nations peacekeepers could be violations of international law under international law,” it was declared, calling for those responsible for the “unacceptable” strike to be brought to justice.

Military Blames Fighter Group

The government forces assigned responsibility for the attack on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a notorious paramilitary group that has been at war with the army for dominance over the country for more than two years.

The attack “clearly reveals the rebellious approach of the armed faction and those behind it,” the military said in a statement.

Background of the Disputed Area

The resource-abundant Abyei is a claimed region between Sudan and South Sudan, and the peacekeeping force has been deployed there since 2011, when the south gained its independence from Sudan.

Appeals for an urgent halt to fighting in Sudan were also issued to allow “a broad, inclusive and nationally led peace process” to settle the fighting.

Country Plunged into Chaos Since 2023

Sudan was engulfed in open war in April 2023 when a dispute for control between the military and the RSF escalated into full-scale combat in the capital, Khartoum and elsewhere the country.

  • The fighting has killed tens of thousands, a toll human rights organizations regard as a major underestimate.
  • Recent hostilities has focused on Kordofan, notably since paramilitary forces took control of El Fasher.
  • The war has wrecked towns and has been noted for grave abuses, such as systematic rape and ethnic slaughter.
  • These crimes have been labeled international crimes by global observers.
  • The situation has also caused the world’s worst humanitarian emergency and forced parts of the country into famine.
